Jake's Platform Overview

I’m running for City Council to support smart, community-driven growth that respects our city’s rural charm while creating opportunities for residents and local businesses. Together, we can ensure our city remains a place where families thrive, small businesses grow, and our quality of life continues to rise.

Jake Lake for City Council - Managing the Future: Growth with Heart, Progress with Purpose

🌾 1. Preserve Our Rural Character While Supporting Smart Growth

Property rights respected. Community character preserved.

  • Support policies that maintain large-lot and agricultural zoning where appropriate, allowing growth without over-urbanizing.
  • Encourage clustered development patterns that preserve open space and farmland while   allowing property owners to benefit from responsible development.
  • Advocate for community input in development plans to ensure projects fit the existing character of our neighborhoods.

🏪 2. Attract and Retain Commercial Business

More Services. More Conveniences. More revenue.

  • Proactively seek partnerships with grocery stores and essential commercial services to reduce resident travel and boost local convenience.
  • Encourage  targeted commercial development to increase our city’s sales tax revenue, which can reduce pressure on property taxes and fund public services.
  • Create a business-friendly environment with streamlined permitting and clear guidelines to attract sustainable, well-planned growth.

🌱 3. Support Local Farmers and Agricultural Heritage

Sustain our farming roots. Feed our future.

  • Promote farmers markets and local agriculture through city-sponsored events and online directories.
  • Offer zoning protections and incentives for active farmland and agri-businesses.
  • Partner with schools and local organizations to educate residents on the value of buying and eating local.

🤝 4. Foster Community Outreach and Service

A connected city is a stronger city.

  • Expand opportunities for residents to engage in city volunteer programs, neighborhood cleanups, and civic events.
  • Host quarterly town halls and community forums to hear directly from residents and keep local government transparent.
  • Establish youth and senior engagement initiatives to increase inclusivity in city planning.

🎉 5. Grow our Parks, Recreation, and Community Events

  Healthy families. Stronger community.

  • Expand the Parks & Recreation department with added staff, resources, and  funding.
  • Help promote our current movie nights, seasonal festivals, and farmers markets we currently offer and introduce more events to encourage more community events.
  • Improve maintenance and amenities at existing parks while identifying opportunities for new green spaces within new developments.

🚲 6. Connect Trails and Outdoor Access

A more walkable, bikeable, connected city.

  • Complete and connect multi-use trails for walking, running, and biking across neighborhoods and natural areas.
  • Apply for regional and state grants to help fund trail expansions and pedestrian infrastructure.
  • Ensure  trails are safe, well-maintained, and accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

🛣 7. Address Road & Sidewalk Connectivity in New Development

  Smart development includes smart infrastructure.

  • Require developers to complete road and sidewalk connections as part of project approval—no more disconnected neighborhoods.
  • Update city codes and planning processes (where applicable) to ensure street and pedestrian continuity.
  • Create partnerships with developers who share a vision for connected, safe communities and hold those who don't accountable.

🌐 8. Bridge the Digital Divide

Reliable internet for all. A future-ready community.

  • Expand High-Speed internet Access by supporting Mapleton City’s Fiber Network to bring fiber internet to all areas, ensuring that all residents and businesses have access to fast, affordable, and reliable internet.
  • Promote Digital Literacy through community classes and public resources, helping seniors, students, and small business owners gain the skills needed to thrive in a connected world.
  • Support Technology Adoption in schools, agriculture, healthcare, and local government to increase efficiency, improve services, and strengthen economic competitiveness.

📚 9. Champion Education and Support for Our Schools

  Strong schools. Strong community.

  • Advocate with Nebo School District for equitable funding and resources for our local schools so every student has the tools they need to succeed—regardless of background or neighborhood.
  • Partner with our school district and community organizations to identify and help meet needs related to infrastructure, technology, extracurricular programs, and student support services.
  • Support workforce development and career readiness by encouraging school-business      partnerships, mentorship programs, and access to trade, tech, and  agricultural education.
  • Promote safe, healthy, and inclusive learning environments where educators are supported and families are actively engaged.

🛍 10. Promote Local and Small Businesses

Support what makes our city unique.

  • Launch a “Buy Mapleton” campaign encouraging residents to shop at locally      owned businesses.
  • Provide marketing and technical support resources for new and existing small businesses.
  • Partner with local business organizations to host business showcases, pop-up markets, and entrepreneurship workshops.

💬 Closing Statement

Our city stands at a crossroads: growth is continuing to come, but how we shape it is up to us. I believe we can grow responsibly—bringing in the services and opportunities our residents want and need—while protecting the rural, neighborly spirit that makes this place home. With your support, we can make sure our city’s future is bright, balanced, and built for everyone.
